Prevention of Suicide and Child Marriage

single-event-img-1

Child marriage is a violation of human rights. It adversely affects education, health and well-being of girls and perpetuates cycles of poverty. Child brides experience the detrimental physical, psychological and social consequences of child marriage. Bangladesh has one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world. Bangladesh, 64% of women currently aged 20–24 were married before the age of 18 (National survey 2013). This is despite the fact that the minimum legal age of marriage for females in Bangladesh is 18 years and 21 for males. On the other hand, suicide and attempted suicide are a serious but under-explored public health problem in Bangladesh. Survey estimates suggest that Jhenaidah District, one of the 64 districts that make up Bangladesh, is one of the highest suicide-prone regions in Bangladesh. Relatively little is known about the magnitude of suicide attempts in the district. According to the latest data from the World Health Organization (WHO), Bangladesh witnesses six incidents of suicide for every 100,000 people (as of 2016). However, according to data from the offices of the civil surgeon and police superintendent, the suicide rate is 22 for every 100,000 people in Jhenaidah district. WHO data also shows that an average of 28 people take their own lives across the country every day, while Jhenaidah alone marks an average of one death every day If a person ask someone What is Jhenaidah known for? Sadly, the answer that comes first is 'suicide'. Prova Society has felt need to work for reducing the suicide and child marriage in Jhenaidah district and implementing various activities in rural and urban areas.
